I have been a UserTesting member for a few years. It is legit and pays pretty well per test, but you will not get many tests. Below is how it works, what it pays, and which sites I recommend if you want to earn more often.
Legit and pays well per test, but tests are rare
You record your screen and voice while you use websites. Around $10 for a regular test, paid through PayPal only.

The short answer
UserTesting is legit and not a scam. You give video feedback on websites and apps, and it pays pretty well for the time you spend on a test.
But you will not get many tests, and how many you get depends a lot on where you live. You need to speak your thoughts out loud in English, and PayPal is the only payout method.
- Pays pretty well for the time spent
- Fun tasks
- Available in many countries
- No special equipment needed
- You see the reward in the invitation before you take a test
- Limited earning opportunities
- The initial sign-up test is a little confusing
- PayPal is the only payout method
- You wait 14 days for your money
- You must speak your thoughts out loud in English

Is UserTesting legit and safe?
Yes, UserTesting is legit. But whether it is worth your time depends a lot on your expectations and where you live. Here is what you should know before you join.
- You will not get many tests
You often need a very specific profile or need to come from a specific part of the world to take part. Do not expect to take tests every day. In some countries, there are no opportunities at all.
- Check your account yourself
Sometimes UserTesting does not send an email when there is a new test, in my experience. Log in once in a while to check for new opportunities.
- Your ratings decide how many tests you get
After each video, the website owner gives you 1 to 5 stars. People with higher ratings have a better chance of getting more tests, so take it seriously and give genuine feedback.
- Do not take tests while traveling
UserTesting detects if you log in from a different country than where you registered. That can get you disqualified or give you very low ratings.
- PayPal only
PayPal is the only payout method, and you must link it before you get paid tests. If PayPal does not work in your country, you cannot get paid.
My takeUserTesting has both good and not-so-good sides. You should only join if you would like to give feedback just once in a while, but do not expect to do so very often. But if that is okay with you, it can be a fun and interesting way to make a little extra money. And it pays pretty well for your time for the tests you qualify for.
UserTesting has few tests. The top sites in your country give you more chances to earn.
See the best sites in your countryHow you earn on UserTesting
There are 2 ways to earn. Regular video tests are the main one. Tap one to read more.
Video testsAround $10 each
When a new test is available, you get a notification and can apply to take it. You first get a scenario, for example: “Imagine that you are interested in visiting this museum and looking for information about it.” Keep it in mind while you take the test.
A screen recorder captures how you navigate the website, while you explain your thoughts with a microphone. Some tests are for your phone, through the app. In my experience, a regular test pays around $10 and takes about 20 minutes, and you then usually answer four written follow-up questions.
It sounds a little complicated at first, but it is a lot simpler than it sounds. You can always see in the invitation what you get, so you decide if you want to take part.
Live conversationsUp to $60
Sometimes there are live conversations, where you get on a video conference call with a customer at a scheduled date and time. They pay up to $60 per test, but they take more time and planning, and they are not available as often as the other tests.

How much can you make?
UserTesting used to say that you could earn up to $60 per test. Now it says that the reward varies by test type. That is more accurate, because $60 was only for the highest-paying tests, and not very often.
UserTesting is very honest about what you can earn. It says clearly that it can be a great way to earn a few extra dollars on the side, but that it won’t make you rich.
How many tests you can take depends very much on where you live and which companies are looking for feedback. Maybe in some countries you can take several a week. Compared to paid survey sites, where you can often take several surveys a day, you will not have many opportunities. UserTesting says it has the most opportunities in English-speaking countries, but I have also seen tests for Spanish, Belgian and Japanese-speaking people.
How you get paid
| Method | Minimum | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| PayPal | Paid for each approved test | 14 days after you complete a test |
PayPal is currently the only payout method. You must link your PayPal account to your UserTesting account before you get access to paid tests, so do this first when you join.
There used to be only one week’s waiting time, but this has increased a bit. It is not a big deal, in my opinion, but you will not get paid immediately.
How to join UserTesting
Choose the “Get Paid to Test” option at the top of the UserTesting website. Enter your email and verify it through the link you receive. Then take the test to become a member. It takes around 5 to 10 minutes.
You download the free screen recorder and record a 5-minute sample video of your screen and voice. This test is unpaid. Watch the tutorial first, because it can be a bit confusing otherwise. Speak your thoughts out loud as much as possible, speak clearly and be honest. There is no right or wrong.
You get an answer within a week. I got an email the next day that said I was approved for the panel. You need to be at least 18, live in a country where PayPal works, and be able to speak your thoughts aloud in English. A headset you already own is enough.
What 25 readers told me
This review has 25 comments since July 2017: 13 from readers and 12 replies from me. These are the three things readers ask about most.
Readers from Russia, Brazil and India asked. You will not find many tests outside English-speaking countries.
Readers asked how they get paid, and one lost access to PayPal. UserTesting only pays through PayPal.
Readers asked if you can earn much. A reader wrote in May 2026 that UserTesting was not accepting sign-ups. I replied that it is likely because of the country.
“Just for the heads up,User testing isn’t accepting any more singups.”
Mikael: Sorry to hear that. But it is likely because of your country. Which country do you live in?
“Maybe it used to be really good a few years ago but now with the paypal only payment method it’s not reliable at all.”
Mikael: This does however seem to be a problem between you and PayPal that does not have anything to do with UserTesting.
“I don’t know if I can make enough money for my pocket money but i can try it. By the way how much it can pay in India ?”
Mikael: You will not find many options on UserTesting from India.
UserTesting alternatives I have reviewed
| Site | Best for | Min. cashout | My rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Userlytics | Usability tests that pay rather well | No threshold | 3.6 / 5 |
| TestingTime | Good pay per test, but few invites | Varies by country | 3.6 / 5 |
| Trymata | Website tests, thinking out loud | Paid per approved test | 3.0 / 5 |
| PlaytestCloud | Game playtests, mainly US, UK, Canada | No threshold | 2.9 / 5 |
If you want to give feedback more regularly, even several times a day, see the legit survey sites in your country. They will most often not pay as well for your time, but they give you a lot more opportunities.

Who tested UserTesting for this review
If you have any comments, questions, or experiences with UserTesting.com, I would love to hear from you in a comment below.
Hey,Mike! Just for the heads up,User testing isn’t accepting any more singups. This is hopeless, I’ve really tried almost everything you write on this blog or YouTube. But for lots of hours of effort I only get paid just enough to afford a can of Coca-Cola a day. Extra money on the side(not funny)
Sorry to hear that. But it is likely because of your country. Which country do you live in?
I don’t know if I can make enough money for my pocket money but i can try it. By the way how much it can pay in India ?
You will not find many options on UserTesting from India. But you can check the best free ways to earn from India here.
Maybe it used to be really good a few years ago but now with the paypal only payment method it’s not reliable at all. Opened my account, make the training passed the test all set go made 5 test and when money started showing up in my paypal account paypal decided I was doing suspicious activities, ask me for many proofs: ID address account balance and activities proof. Sent everything and without even an email they permanently locked my account and took all the money I made. Also paypal has an arbitrary clause where they can keep 2500 usd for the trouble of monitoring you so I don’t even hope to see that money again. You can check this issue with PayPal in a simple Google search, trustpilot opinions, and even their own community board, it’s simply not reliable anymore and since is the only payment method for Usertesting then they are not reliable either
Sorry to hear that and thanks for sharing.
This does however seem to be a problem between you and PayPal that does not have anything to do with UserTesting. But unfortunately, I sometimes hear stories like this about people having PayPal issues.
Hope you will get it fixed and get your money.
Those UserTesting services are worthless for those who live in countries like Russia, so I give you a bad mark!!!
Thanks for sharing your experiences Artemi.
There are some survey sites that have decent options in Russia as far as I know. If you want me to give you a few ideas of good sites that are available there, just let me know.
Mikael
Yes, I’d be grateful for it, thanks.
Try sites like Surveytime, ClixSense, WowApp, and Toluna. They should all have some opportunities in Russia.
Hope this helps.
Well, all those Eng-Language sites redirect me on other platforms whatever survey i choose, and those platforms are russian and they redirect me to other russian survey platforms one by one =). So i just came to conclusion that i need VPN to hide my worthless russian IP. Do you agree ?
The reason the English platforms redirect you to Russian sites is because that is your location. So they will redirect you to surveys in your own language most of the time. But you should still be able to take some of the surveys and get paid into those platforms I mention.
About the VPN then you just have to be aware that many sites do not allow that and will detect if you use one. If a site that does not allow it detect you are using a VPN, they will block your account. So make sure to read the terms for the survey sites before using one. I have a whole article about VPN for surveys you can check out for more details.
How do i have to maximally secure myself from getting banned in survey sites for using VPN. Should i have special browser for VPN(for example Internet Explorer) and work with survey sites?
Thanks for your assistance.
The survey sites do what they can to avoid people using VPN to hide their location so I do not know of any way to get around this on the sites that do not allow it.
Much Gratitude for this cool informative website, Mikael.
This User Testing and survey sounds like a cool avenue to make a little extra money on the side of another venture online like blogging or affiliate marketing, the information you provide is very valuably keep it coming.
Anyway I’m from down in New Zealand and feel so privileged to connect with people like yourself looking for a better life getting out of debt.
Many Blessings
J W RIDDELL
Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate it and very glad to hear you find the information useful.
All the best,
Mikael
I’ m quite interested in this opportunity. Do you know if Brazil is one of the countries with great amount of tests to take?
As far as I know, it is not one of the countries with a lot of options. But you can check out this list of the best sites in Brazil for some sites I know give good opportunities there.
Hope this helps.
Your review on User Testing .com is clear and informative.
User Testing seamed to be more beneficial to it’s companies than to its members?
Am I to understand that members verbalizing their thoughts while making the video will play an integral roll in the video?
So, with all it’s straightforward settings, one should not expect to earn much from this company. Only if one is lucky?
Thanks for the feedback. I think UserTesting is also useful for its panel members. You might not get a lot of tests you can do depending on where you live, but the ones you can do pay $10 for just speaking your thoughts out loud for 15-20 minutes – I think that is pretty good.
Yes, it is a very important aspect when doing the test to speak out loud. This way the company can understand what you like, do not like, what confuses you, what you are thinking etc. and this will make it easier for them to adjust the user experience on the website.
All the best,
Mikael
I was thinking about signing up but I’ve tried these “Make money from surveys” type of things so many times and they all seem to never work! I will for sure give this a try! But I do have a few questions, how exactly will you get paid? And do they pay you through paypal?
Thanks for your comment Emiliano.
Sorry to hear about your bad past experiences with surveys. If you join the right sites, they will definitely give you opportunities. As I always mention, you should however not expect it to make you rich, but it can make some nice extra money. As for UserTesting, whether it will work for you or not really depends mostly on where in the world you live. So if you do not live in an English-speaking country, you should not have too high expectations on the amount of opportunities.
How you will get paid depends on the specific survey site. UserTesting only offer payout through PayPal. Many other sites also offer PayPal, and some also offer additional options like other payment platforms, vouchers or products.
All the best,
Mikael
This is a great review, very detailed, concise, and to the point. The author obviously researched the software and comes from a position of authority with the review. And that comment comes from a person who is totally unfamiliar with this particular website. The one suggestion I could make to the author would be to check the grammar again, make sure there are the correct conjunctions in the right places, more of a proofread than anything else, minor issues. Good luck with the review!
Thanks for your feedback and comment Steve. Glad to hear your find the information useful. And appreciate your feedback about the grammar. I have had an extra look and will do my best to write as correct English as possible.
Thanks,
Mikael
wow, really, incorrect grammer is all you have to say? I really do not understand some people, you reply to hundreds of emails and if you have a typo, oh well, how petty.
