TestMate Review – Legit? (What You NEED to Know)

TestMate Rating

TestMate is not a bad usability testing platform to earn from. If you are eligible to join, you should try to sign up. However, before you do, you must adjust your expectations accordingly.

I checked out TestMate, an Australian usability testing platform, to see if it is worth your time. It is legit and pays a decent amount per test, straight to PayPal, but there are not always tests available. Below is what I found, and which sites I recommend instead.

Legit, decent pay per test, but few tests

Most tests pay around $10 to $15 AUD for 10 to 20 minutes, straight to PayPal. Only for Australia and the US, and tests are not always available.

The short answer

TestMate is legit, since you can really earn from the tests it offers. It is a usability testing platform based in Australia. You test websites and apps while you record your screen and voice, and you are paid per test through PayPal, with no payout threshold.

But you won’t always have tests available, so you won’t be able to earn a lot from it. It is only for Australia and the US. If you are eligible and you adjust your expectations, it is worth signing up.

What I like
  • Offers decent pay per test
  • Uses PayPal as a payout option
  • No payout threshold
  • Each test usually takes 10 to 20 minutes
  • Support replied fairly quickly and was quite helpful when I contacted them
What I don’t like
  • Limited earning opportunities
  • Doesn’t have an FAQ or Help page you can check out
  • Only available in Australia and the US
  • You must pass a sample test first
  • No member dashboard: everything goes by email

Is TestMate legit and safe?

Yes, TestMate is legit, since you can really earn from the opportunities it offers. But that does not automatically mean it is worth your time. Here is what you should know.

  • Tests are not always available

How often you get invites depends on your demographics and location. Some testers receive several per week, others only a few each month. The number of tests can vary a lot from week to week.

  • You must pass a sample test

Every new tester completes a short sample test first. It shows TestMate whether you can clearly explain your thoughts while you use a website. Only if you pass do you get real test invites.

  • Only Australia and the US

TestMate is based in Australia, and it has a US version. If you live in the US, you will likely get more invites, because many of its clients are English-speaking companies.

  • Your work is reviewed before you are paid

After you upload your recording, the team checks that it meets their quality standards. Describe what you see, what confuses you, and what you like or dislike. That is how you get approved faster and invited to more tests.

My takeIn my opinion, TestMate is not a bad usability testing platform to earn from. If you are eligible to join, you should try to sign up. However, before you do, you must adjust your expectations accordingly. Even though it pays a decent amount per test, you still won’t be able to earn a lot from it because of the limited earning opportunities available.

TestMate does not always have tests. These sites let you earn more regularly.

How you earn on TestMate

There is only one way to earn: usability tests.

Usability tests$10 to $15 AUD each
Usability tests on TestMate

TestMate has no member dashboard, so everything goes by email. After the sample test, TestMate emails you an invite whenever a test matches your profile. Each invite shows the test description, the estimated time and what you will earn. You can accept or decline it.

Each test usually takes 10 to 20 minutes. You complete a few simple tasks on a website or app while you record your screen and voice, and you describe what you see, what confuses you, and what you like or dislike.

When you are done, you upload your recording. The team reviews it, and if it meets their quality standards, your test is approved and you get paid. You need a quiet room for this work.

How much can you make?

TestMate pays you per test, so your earnings depend entirely on how many test invites you receive and qualify for.

Most tests pay around $10 to $15 AUD (roughly $7 to $10 USD) for 10 to 20 minutes of work. That is a decent rate for the time spent, in my opinion.

But there is one big catch: you won’t always have tests available. So while the pay per test is fair, do not expect a stable income from TestMate. It is best viewed as a side hustle for a bit of extra cash whenever tests are available, which is why I would say its earning potential is not that great.

How you get paid

MethodMinimumSpeed
PayPalNone. You are paid per test.Usually within a few days after your test is approved

You enter your PayPal address when you register. Once your test is reviewed and approved, the payment goes directly to your PayPal account. You do not need to build up earnings before you can withdraw, which is a very convenient system, in my opinion.

How to join TestMate

Fill out the sign-up form with your name, email, country, PayPal address and a few questions about your device and experience level. Here you also indicate which types of usability tests you are willing to do, for example tests of mobile apps.

You then receive instructions for a short sample test. You record your screen and voice while you complete a few simple tasks on a website. The goal is to show that you can speak clearly and describe your thoughts naturally.

The TestMate team reviews your sample test. If it meets their quality standards, you are added to their tester pool. This usually takes a few days. After that, you start getting email invitations for real tests.

If you have questions, use the contact form on the website. If your question is about a test you are working on, reply to the invite email, so TestMate can track it more easily.
