I tested the THX app, which rewards you for sharing your opinions and media habits. It is legit and takes little effort, but the rewards are low and you only get gift cards. Below is what I found, and which sites I recommend instead.
Legit and low effort, but low rewards and gift cards only
Short surveys and a passive media feature in a few European countries. 200 points = £1, usually from £10, in gift cards.

The short answer
THX is a legit survey app. You earn points by answering short surveys and by letting the app listen for TV, radio and outdoor ads in the background. It does not take a lot of effort to earn.
But the rewards are low, and it does not offer cash rewards, only gift cards. It can take a bit of time to earn a decent amount, so you have to be patient. I would only use it as an additional app, and only if you are okay with gift cards instead of cash.
- Offers a passive form of earning
- Requires little effort to earn rewards
- Low rewards
- Doesn’t offer cash rewards
- Its passive form of earning can drain your battery quickly

Is THX legit and safe?
Yes, THX is legit, since you can really earn rewards from it. But that does not automatically make it worth your while. Here is what you should know before you install it.
- The app listens through your microphone
Media Research works by letting the app run in the background and “listen” while you watch TV, listen to the radio or walk past outdoor ads. You need to be comfortable with an app listening to everything that is going on around you. Personally, I am not too comfortable with that, but it is a matter of personal preference.
- It drains your battery
Media Research makes your phone’s battery drain a lot faster. Only turn it on when your phone is fully charged.
- Low rewards, and fewer surveys over time
When I tested the app, there was a decent number of opportunities at the beginning. But as you keep using it, they keep dwindling. The profile bonus only pays once, so it takes longer to reach the threshold after your first reward.
- Gift cards only
THX does not offer cash rewards. The gift cards you can get depend on where you live.
- Only in a few countries
The website does not say which countries THX works in. From what I can see, it is available in at least France, the UK, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands. If you do not live in one of them, it is not for you.
My takeIn my opinion, THX is not a bad app to earn rewards. But it also does not have a lot of upsides. It does not take a lot of effort to earn, but it takes a bit of time to earn a decent amount, so you have to be patient. Because it does not offer cash rewards, I would only recommend it if you need an additional app to earn from, and only if you are okay with gift cards instead of cash.

There are 3 ways to earn. Short surveys pay the most points. Tap one to read more.
Sharing your opinion5 points per microsurvey
Go to the Opinion section of the app to see all the opportunities. Typically, you answer microsurveys, which are just short surveys. From time to time, you are also asked to rate video ads.
It is a very straightforward way to earn. You get a set number of points after each microsurvey or video ad rating. There was a decent number of opportunities when I started, but they kept dwindling as I kept using the app.
Media Research1 point per hour
Allow the app to track TV and radio ads through your phone’s microphone. It runs in the background and “listens” while you watch TV or listen to the radio. It also works outdoors for outdoor advertising, if you turn the feature on when you go out.
It is not much, but it takes no effort. It drains your battery a lot faster, so only use it when your phone is fully charged.
Prize drawsLuck only
You join the prize draws automatically when you earn points. Each point increases your chances of winning. Each draw runs for a set period, and the winner is announced at the end. The prize is usually an electronic gadget, like a GoPro or a phone.
It is not a guaranteed way to earn. Do not count on it.

How much can you make?
It depends on how often you use the app: how many surveys you can answer and how often you turn on Media Research. Most members say they can realistically earn between £10 and £20 a month.
You typically earn 5 points per microsurvey or questionnaire and 1 point per hour of Media Research. Completing your profile gives you quite a number of bonus points, but only once. After you have answered all the profile questions, it takes longer to reach the threshold.
Overall, the earning potential is not that high because the rewards are low. That is to be expected, because most of the opportunities take little effort. What you earn depends on how much time and effort you put in.
How you get paid
